The War Illustrated
The British war magazine The War Illustrated, subtitled A Pictorial Record of the Conflict of the Nation, began its long and award-winning run as nothing more than a propaganda rag. It didn't just print unsubstantiated stories of German war atrocities, but made them up from whole clothe (babies on German bayonets, etc.). The first issue appeared just 18 days after Britain declared war, and was published continuously until February 8, 1919.
Fortunately, sometime in 1916, the magazine adopted strict journalistic standards and began publishing articles by the best and most respected war corespondents in the field, such as Hamilton Fyfe. It soon became one of the premiere war newsmagazines on the newsstands, with a circulation of 750,000 at its peak. As its name would imply, though, the major draw for The War Illustrated was its illustrations, which during WW1, included the dramatic art of Stanley Wood, and the finest photographers in the business.
The War Illustrated returned to publication on September 16, 1939, with articles by the likes of Winston Churchill, H. G. Wells, Hamilton Fyfe and Luigi Barzini, among others. The illustrations in this second run continued to be high-quality fare, with work by famed photographers as well as outstanding war artists. By the time The War Illustrated permanently ceased publication on April, 11, 1947, many blocks of its issues had been reprinted and bound in popular editions.
Presented here are full issues from the second, WW2 run of this fine magazine. First up is issue number one, published on September 16, 1939, a mere thirteen days after Britain and France declared war on Nazi Germany. Not only does it detail the history of how the British people found themselves in yet another war on the Continent, but it conveys a sense of the mood of the people facing this difficult situation, and an idea of what they expected would occur as the situation developed. The assumptions made in this regard are extremely interesting, both in those aspects accurately foreseen and those not even dreamed of.
Subsequent issues detail the progress of the war as well as the evolution of the perception of the War by the British people. This is a rare and fascinating narrative in primary documents that are valuable as history and thoroughly entertaining to boot. I hope you profit from reading them as much as I have. -Wally
